Seasonal Skincare: How to Adjust Your Routine Year-Round
Your skin in January is not the same as your skin in July. Temperature, humidity, wind, and indoor heating all change what your skin needs. Sticking to the exact same routine year-round can leave your skin dry and flaky in winter or congested and oily in summer. Here's a simple seasonal guide.
Winter
Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating strips what's left. Your skin barrier is working overtime. Switch to a richer moisturizer, add a hydrating serum (look for glycerin or hyaluronic acid), and consider a gentle oil on top to seal everything in. Be careful with harsh exfoliants — your barrier is more vulnerable in winter.
Spring
Transition season. As humidity rises, you may need to lighten up your moisturizer. This is a good time to reintroduce exfoliants if you backed off during winter, and to start being more diligent about SPF as sun intensity increases.
Summer
Heat and humidity mean more oil production and sweat. Switch to a lightweight, gel-based moisturizer. Double down on SPF — reapplication is critical. If you're prone to breakouts, use a non-comedogenic formula and consider a gentle BHA (like salicylic acid) to keep pores clear.
Fall
The reverse of spring — start transitioning back to richer products as temperatures drop. Fall is also a great time to reintroduce retinol if you took a break from it during peak summer sun exposure.
You don't have to overhaul everything each season. Even small adjustments — swapping a lotion for a cream, or adding a hydrating toner — can make a significant difference in how your skin looks and feels.
